In the midst of the Aegean Sea, 90 miles south of Piraeus and surrounded by the rest of its “fellow” Cyclades Islands, lies the island of Paros. With a population of approximately 15.000, Paros is famous throughout history for its Parian marble, a fine-grained semi-translucent pure-white and entirely flawless marble, highly prized by ancient Greeks. Some of the greatest masterpieces of ancient Greek sculpture were carved from Parian marble, including the Medici Venus and the Winged Victory (Nike) of Samothrace. The original quarries, which were used from the 6th century BC onwards, can still be seen on the north side of the island on the slopes of its central peak.
Nowadays Paros has become the destination for great fun and vacation, with its mild climate, secluded beaches and picturesque villages. Apart from Parikia, being the “Chora” - the capital city - Paros has smaller villages and places to visit and relax, especially in the southern part, protected by the northern winds. Between the ancient harbour of Dryos and Chrissi Akti beach is the brand new complex of Flora Apartments: “Olive” and “Jasmine”.
